Seongnam City and Seongnam Office of Education formed an integrated working-level consultative body to attract Seongnam to science high schools in May and reviewed the idle site for the new school and the method of converting Bundang Central High School to science high schools.

In the case of the new school system, after reviewing idle sites in Seongnam, it was found that dormitories and research buildings lacked the site area to establish essential science high schools.

In the meantime, Bundang Jungang High School, which has been operated as a science-focused school since 2009, has expressed its intention to switch to a science high school, and the city has prepared to attract science high schools in this way with the Seongnam Office of Education, judging that using the municipal land behind the school site can secure the area of the site necessary for the establishment of the science high school.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education plans to receive applications from cities and counties in the province from the 1st to the 8th of this month, and then preliminarily designate science high schools at the end of this month through a separate review committee.

The evaluation criteria are three areas: school establishment (40 points), school operation (30 points), and curriculum (30 points).

Later in late December, the Special Purpose High School Designation Steering Committee, composed of members commissioned by the Minister of Education, will deliberate on the preliminary designation, and the superintendent of education will announce the designation of new science high schools with the consent of the Minister of Education in February next year.

Gyeonggi Buk Science High School, which opened in Uijeongbu City in 2005, is the only science high school in Gyeonggi Province.

Currently, there are about 10 local governments in the province, including Seongnam, that have expressed their intention to attract science high schools.
