1 in 10 married couples are multicultural...5.3% of babies born

Last year, one in 10 married couples was a multicultural marriage, and the proportion of babies born from multicultural families rose to 5.3 percent among all births.

Statistics Korea said there were 24,431 multicultural marriages last year, up 17.2% from a year ago, accounting for 10.6% of all marriages.

The proportion of multicultural marriages exceeded 10% to 10.3% in 2019, but suffered from COVID-19, falling to 7.2% in 2021 and then rebounding.

Last year, there were 12,150 multicultural births, down 3% from a year earlier, but the total number of births decreased by 7.7%, making up the proportion of multicultural births in all births up 0.3%p to 5.3%.
