Ten newborns were killed and 16 seriously injured after a fire broke out in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on the 15th local time.

There were 55 newborns in the ward at the time of the fire, and 45 were rescued and taken to other hospitals for treatment.

By the time firefighters arrived, the ward had already been engulfed in flames, forcing them to break windows and enter, and rescue efforts began 30 minutes after the fire, Reuters reported, citing witnesses.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The ICU on fire had a fire alarm installed, but the patient's parents and witnesses said the alarm was not working.

State Lt. Gov. Brajesh Pathak promised government support to the bereaved families and vowed a thorough investigation.
