U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has named an FCC member of the current Republican Party of Brendan Carr, who has advocated for technology deregulation as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, which oversees U.S. broadcasting and telecommunications policies.
Carr, also known as a close ally of Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk, has been opposed to censorship of social media and big tech companies.
"Congressman Carr is a freedom of speech fighter," Trump said in a statement, "and has fought back against regulations that stifled American freedom and hamstrung the economy."
The New York Times reported that telecommunications industry experts are concerned about the possibility that Carr may try to expand the FCC's power, which has remained politically neutral, and use it as a political weapon for the right-wing wing of the United States.
