The Air Force has begun initial work to distribute 20 additional F-35A stealth fighters.

The Air Force said all 39 F-35A stealth fighter jets introduced so far are deployed at Cheongju Base, where the 17th Fighter Wing is located, and it is considering deploying the second batch to other bases as early as 2026.

The F-35A stealth fighter is the core power of the "kill chain," which refers to an attack system that removes key targets such as North Korea's nuclear and missile launch systems before use if there are obvious signs of use.

In particular, the need for distributed deployment of F-35A fighter jets has been raised as North Korea has explicitly expressed its intention to attack air bases first in response to South Korean air power.

Earlier in October 2022, North Korea threatened an intensive fire strike drill that could strike the "ex-operational airfield," which means an air base.

In February last year, it launched a 600mm super-large multiple rocket launcher, a short-range ballistic missile (SRBM), targeting Cheongju Air Base, and in March, it unveiled the launch of tactical guided weapons targeting South Korean air bases on the western front.
