Ngozi Okonzo-Iwella, secretary-general of the World Trade Organization and WTO, was re-elected today (29th) by agreement of member states without a vote.

Okonzo-Iwella's term runs until August next year, but African countries have called for an advance in the selection process, saying they have only one candidate and need to prepare for next year's WTO ministerial meeting.

However, in reality, the general observation is that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump feared that he would veto the election of the president as he did four years ago.

In 2020, then-U.S. President Trump supported our country's Trade Minister Yu Myung-hee as WTO Secretary-General, so Okonzo-Iwella could only become president after President Biden took office the following year.

The election of the WTO Secretary-General is difficult to proceed if even one country opposes it because unanimity is the practice.
