According to a survey by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the infection of intestinal parasites in the areas around the five major rivers, the overall infection rate was 4.5%, a slight increase from the previous year.
By parasite, 2.3% of liver fluke, a carcinogenic pathogen, 1.9% of intestinal fluke, and 0.2% of whipworms were counted.
In particular, a high infection rate of more than 10% was confirmed in some areas of the Nakdonggang River and Seomjingang River basins, including 12.6% in Hadong-gun, 11.7% in Gurye-gun, and 10.3% in Andong-si.
The survey was conducted on 26,000 residents of 39 cities and counties around the five major rivers, including the Han River, Nakdong River, and Geumgang River.
