Novelist Han Kang, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, said he hopes his masterpiece "The Boy Is Coming" will be an access road to understanding the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.

Han Kang said at a press conference for the Korean media held in Stockholm, Sweden on the 11th local time, "I was more careful as I dealt with the actual incident of 'The Boy is Coming,' and there was a hope that this book would be like some kind of access road to understanding Gwangju."

is one of the representative works of the Han River, which tells the story of victims, including middle school students who lost their lives to martial law forces during the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.

When asked which work to read first, he replied, "I think it would be good if the first time was 'The Boy is Coming' for Korean readers, and I hope to continue reading 'I won't say goodbye' connected to this book."

Regarding the meaning of winning the Nobel Prize for Literature, Han Kang said, "I have come to look back on my past a lot while writing a lecture," and that he has come to understand his "coordinates" from where he started to come here and where he is now.

"I've been writing all the time so far, but I don't think there's any reason it's going to be difficult to write in the future," he said, adding, "I'm going to keep writing what I've been using."

Asked about the emergency martial law situation, the author said, "I heard about the situation on the news before I left Korea on the 5th, but I couldn't take a proper look because I had too much work after arriving here," adding, "I don't understand the content enough to say anything."

Han Kang said at a press conference on the 6th, "I was very shocked that the martial law situation was unfolding again in 2024, and I am eager not to return to the past situation of controlling by force or coercion."
