Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that he will develop artificial intelligence and AI with members of the United Arab Emirates (BRICS).
Speaking at the Sberbank conference in Moscow, Putin said he would build a new "AI alliance network" and that other interested countries, including BRICS countries, would also participate, according to Reuters.
These remarks are interpreted as a sign that they will join forces with China, India, and Brazil to fight for supremacy with the United States in AI, which is considered the most innovative technology of the 21st century.
"What Russian scientists are currently working on in the global competition to develop strong AI is an advanced solution," Putin said. "I hope scientists from all over the world will join this cooperation."
Putin has expressed his ambition to become an AI powerhouse for years, but the war in Ukraine has left AI professionals and made it difficult to introduce advanced AI technologies due to Western sanctions.
Hermann Gref, CEO of state-owned Sberbank, which leads Russia's AI development with state support, said last year that it was difficult to find graphics processing units and GPUs used to implement AI.
Sberbank announced that BRICS members Brazil, China, India and South Africa, as well as non-BRICS countries such as Serbia and Indonesia, have joined the AI alliance.
The company added that the alliance would facilitate joint research into technology and AI regulation, and provide opportunities for AI products to be sold in countries.
