Lee Hwa-young, former governor of peace in Gyeonggi Province, appealed against a retrial ruling that sentenced him to seven years and eight months in prison for conspiring to send $8 million to the North by Ssangbangwool Group.
Former lieutenant governor Lee filed an appeal against the second trial's ruling, which sentenced him to seven years and eight months in prison and a fine of 250 million won on charges of violating the Foreign Exchange Transaction Act.
The prosecution also appealed earlier, saying that there was a misunderstanding of the law in the second trial ruling, which sentenced a sentence less than the first trial.
Earlier, the second trial court sentenced Ssangbangwool Group to seven years and eight months in prison, reducing 1 year and 10 months in consideration of the sentencing conditions, while maintaining the first trial's judgment that it delivered $8 million to the North at the request of former lieutenant governor Lee.
