Fast-beat music plays and people shake their bodies and dance excitedly.
This is a restaurant that reminds you of a club.
Under the current law, it is illegal to sing or dance with sound facilities in general restaurants.
In the midst of this, Jeju Island held a debate to discuss the necessity of enacting an ordinance that allows dancing in general restaurants.
The proponents argued that regulations on dancing in general restaurants are not realistic and that regulations should be relaxed in consideration of the characteristics of the situation in order to attract tourists and revitalize the local economy.
[Jo Jin-hoon / Jeju Convention & View Road MICE Support Team: This part should be allowed to a certain extent, and we don't dance at sushi restaurants or meat restaurants. I'm not talking about that, but I'd like to say that we should decide after looking at the specificity.]
He emphasized that only some areas, such as downtown areas and tourist-crowded areas, should be allowed and the problems should be gradually supplemented.
[Kang Chul-ho / Chairman of Jeju-si Lee Do Dong Residents' Self-Governing Committee: Hamdeok Coastal Road to the east of Haksa Rowan, and Jungmun Tourist Complex to Aewol, to compensate for the problems by designating and operating even a few places..]
On the other hand, there were also voices of concern.
Nearby residential areas may cause noise, traffic congestion, safety problems, etc.
He argued that strong regulations are needed, saying that if it leads to
social problems, it could eventually hit Jeju's image and tourism industry.
[Yeon Young-chan / Chairman of Jeju-si Yeon-dong Residents' Self-Governing Committee: Even now, many residents still feel the noise damage as the biggest inconvenience, and I think this could cause greater inconvenience to residents.]
[Park In-cheol / Chairman of Jeju Small Business Association: The public has a negative meaning about dance, but I'm worried that it may cause the number of tourists to decline or the image of Jeju Island to fall when it becomes a social problem in Jeju Island]
In particular, he added that since general restaurants sometimes do not have fire fighting facilities, they should also consider expanding fire fighting facilities and inspecting methods.
[Kim Minchul / Jeju Island member of the Korea Fire Facility Association: From our point of view, there may be a restaurant that doesn't have any fire fighting facilities]
There are eight local governments nationwide that have enacted and implemented ordinances to allow dancing in general restaurants.
Amid the controversy over the pros and cons, attention is being paid to what solutions and conclusions Jeju will make.
