Negotiations for a cease-fire between Palestinian militant Hamas and Israel have resumed in Qatar.
Attention is focusing on whether the stalled negotiations will take a new turn in the new year amid the Israeli military's attack on Gaza.

Dozens of people were killed across Gaza in the new year as Israeli airstrikes continued.
The Israeli military has claimed to have targeted senior Palestinian militant Hamas police officers or the head of the security forces, but this time it has also been sacrificed heavily by civilians.

Meanwhile, Hamas announced that ceasefire negotiations with Israel resumed in Qatar on the 3rd local time.
Hamas emphasized that it would focus on ensuring a complete cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of occupying forces.
The announcement appears to come after Israel sent a working delegation to Doha for ceasefire negotiations.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu authorized officials, including the spy agency Mossad and the Israeli military, to continue negotiations on a ceasefire in Doha, Qatar.
Negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza seemed to be gaining momentum at the end of November last year, but failed to reach a final agreement because they could not narrow their differences over the exchange of hostages and prisoners and ways to end the war permanently.
Attention is focusing on whether the first contact this new year will open the door to stalled ceasefire negotiations.
