Ukraine, which had been pushed back by Russia's restoration of Kursk, launched a counterattack on the 5th local time.
Russia's defence ministry said in a statement that the enemy had launched a counteroffensive by sending a charge unit consisting of two tanks, one obstacle-breaking vehicle and 12 armored vehicles to deter Russian advances in the direction of Kursk.
Artillery and fighter jets from the Northern Command then repelled Ukrainian forces, it added.
Andriy Yermark, the head of Ukraine's presidential office, said there was good news in the Kursk region and that Russia was paying the right price.
In a related development, the BBC reported that Ukrainian forces have launched a new offensive in the Kursk region of western Russia, but it is unclear if it is a large enough attack to change the situation.
Reuters also said that Russian military bloggers say that Russian forces have been on the defensive due to recent Ukrainian attacks, contrary to Russia's announcement that it had prevented Ukrainian forces from fighting back.
