The first person infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) has died in the United States.
The Louisiana Department of Health says a patient who was hospitalized for contracting H5N1 died on the 6th local time.
The death was reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the middle of last month to be the first person infected with H5N1.
The Louisiana Department of Health said the patient was over 65 years old and had underlying medical conditions.
The patient was found to have H5N1 after being exposed to poultry and wild birds raised in the backyard of the house.
The Louisiana Department of Health's investigation found no additional H5N1 cases or evidence of human-to-human transmission within the region.
According to the CDC, the H5N1 virus spread to hundreds of dairy farms in the United States last year, and it has spread to humans, with 66 cases reported since April last year.
Until the first death this time, all infected people showed minor symptoms.
Health authorities are investigating whether the deceased had any mutations in the infected virus.
According to CNN, experts have warned that the H5N1 virus will show its power as it spreads.
