It has been found that residents are secretly trading beer tickets distributed to the famous "Daedonggang Beer Restaurant," a beer restaurant in North Korea.
Citing a source in Pyongyang, the Daily NK reported on the 6th that the Taedong River beer restaurant in Pyongyang is now crowded with people even in the middle of winter, and some residents are selling back tickets for distributed beer by inflating prices on the black market.
According to the source, you must have a beer card to use the Daedonggang beer restaurant.
Adult men living in Pyongyang receive a card to buy 5L of beer every month through the People's Class, but they are not subject to distribution when they are serving in the military or dispatched abroad.
Residents carry beer cards to Daedonggang Beer House, exchange them for beer tickets for 500 won per liter in North Korea, and drink beer. It is known that many ordinary citizens visit because of its relatively low price.
However, the source said not many residents drink the full 5L of their monthly quota.
He said, "Drinking Taedonggang beer in Pyongyang is one of the privileges that Pyongyang citizens enjoy, but there are a lot of people who cannot enjoy beer due to economic constraints."
As a result, some residents are reportedly trading their exchanged beer tickets for 2,500 to 3,000 won per liter (North Korean money) on the black market to add to their living expenses, which is sold at a price that is five to six times higher than the regular price.
"The beer ticket trade is already a long time ago, and people generally don't consider it a big problem, asking what's wrong with it," the source said. "But we don't talk about it publicly because if we get caught trading like this, punishment can follow."
