Prosecutors Re-Request for Arrest Warrant of Justice for 'violation of Political Fund Act'

The prosecution has re-requested an arrest warrant for Justice Jeon Sung-bae, who is suspected of violating the Political Fund Act.

The arrest warrant was rejected once earlier, but the prosecution said it further confirmed the facts about the reason for the arrest.

The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office today (7th) re-applied an arrest warrant for Justice Jeon Sung-bae, who is suspected of violating the Political Fund Act.

Earlier on the 19th of last month, the court rejected the arrest warrant requested by the prosecution, saying that the date, exact amount, and method of receiving the money were not clearly confirmed.

The prosecution said further investigations have confirmed facts about the reason for the arrest, including the destruction of evidence and the fear of fleeing.

Jeon is suspected of receiving about 150 million won in bribes from a prospective candidate who ran in the Liberty Korea Party's internal election for the mayor of Yeongcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, in the 2018 local election.

In this regard, Jeon reportedly denied the allegations by stating that he received money in the name of "prayer money" in the prosecution's investigation, but partially returned it after the candidate failed the election.

Previously, Jeon was known to be active in the presidential campaign of Yoon Suk Yeol in 2022 and is also close to First Lady Kim Gun-hee,

If Jeon's whereabouts are secured, the prosecution's investigation into the so-called "lawmaker phone" could expand beyond the 2018 local elections to the entire political circle.
