What judgment did the court make?

Yes, the court sentenced the company commander and the vice lieutenant commander to five years in prison and three years, respectively, for ordering to take care of them.

The charges applied are abuse of authority under the military criminal law and abuse and death under the criminal law.

The court explained that the mistreatment directed to the trainees was harsh beyond due training and that the intentionality of the abuse was also recognized.

The incident occurred in May last year.

Lieutenant Nam, a lieutenant of the lieutenant general, decided to train six trainees for talking after the call of bedtime.

Afterwards, he reported to Captain Kang, the company commander, and was approved, but he did not receive the necessary clarification opportunity and confirmation letter for military training.

At that time, the trainees had only been admitted for 10 days, so they did not receive all the supplies.

Because of this, the empty commander made him fill it with books.

The trainees wore military uniforms weighing more than 30 kilograms and were given a warning for violating regulations such as running on a first-come, first-served basis and push-ups.

A trainee Park collapsed during an hour-long struggle and was taken to the hospital, but he died.

During the trial, fellow trainees testified that the company commander grabbed the fallen trainee by the collar and shook him and shouted not to fake him.

Earlier, the prosecution demanded 10 years and 7 years in prison for the company commander and the vice lieutenant commander, respectively.

Eight months after the incident, the court found the company commander and deputy lieutenant commander guilty and sentenced them to prison.
