Japan's Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya said, "We are watching with great interest and personally believe in the strength of Korean democracy," regarding the confusion caused by Korea's December 3 emergency martial law and the subsequent impeachment.
When asked about the current situation in Korea at a regular press conference, Foreign Minister Iwaya replied, "I will refrain from commenting because it is related to the internal affairs."
"Although it has not always been good, the relationship between Korea and Japan has improved significantly under the former Kishida administration and we want to maintain this trend," Foreign Minister Iwaya said of Korea-Japan relations, which marked the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations this year.
Of course, there are many tasks, but we will reduce them one by one and increase areas where we can cooperate together through persistent dialogue and efforts, he added.
Regarding the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations this year, Foreign Minister Iwaya said, "The two countries have confirmed that they are preparing from the point of view that it is very important for the people of both countries and the future of both countries," adding, "We will proceed with the commemorative project as much as possible."
Foreign Minister Iwaya is expected to visit South Korea around the 13th to meet with Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol.
