While Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to purchase Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, the Danish government has clarified its intention to reject it unless it is subject to sale.
Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen appeared on a local broadcaster and emphasized that "the only thing that can determine Greenland's future is Greenland," adding, "As Greenland's prime minister has already said, it is not for sale."
"We have a very close partnership with the United States, and the United States is part of the same alliance," Frederiksen said. "This is an important aspect, and on the other hand, I would encourage you to respect Greenland and Greenlanders."
This is the first time Prime Minister Frederiksen has expressed his position after Trump said he would push for the purchase of Greenland again on the 22nd of last month.
Prime Minister Frederiksen dismissed it as "outrageous" even when then-President Trump unilaterally insisted on buying Greenland in 2019.
President Trump took issue with the remarks and canceled his visit to Denmark, causing a diplomatic conflict.
Since Trump's remarks, Greenland's political circles have also called for independence from Denmark.
"Like the rest of the world, we must work to remove and advance the obstacles to cooperation, which can be called the shackles of colonialism," Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede said in his New Year's address.
In particular, some predict that it is time to take an important step forward, mentioning the fact that parliamentary elections are scheduled in April, so that they may seek a referendum on independence.
