U.S. Ambassador to Japan, "South Korea, the U.S. and Japan will survive cooperation...I don't know what's going on."

2025.01.10 AM 08:38
Regarding the direction of trilateral cooperation between South Korea, the U.S., and Japan in the next U.S. administration, Lam Emanuel, the U.S. ambassador to Japan, expressed his opinion, "I think it will survive, but I don't know if it will proceed further."

According to Japanese media on the 10th local time, Ambassador Emanuel met with reporters the day before and said, "It will continue to be in the national interests of the three countries, but I don't know if it will proceed further."

The trilateral cooperation between South Korea, the U.S. and Japan follows President Biden's grid-like security framework, which values allies based on values, and has been in full swing since the Camp David summit in August last year.

However, there is speculation that the foreign policy led by the second Trump administration, which values realistic interests, will change significantly.

Regarding U.S. President Biden's refusal to buy U.S. steelmaker U.S. Steel, Ambassador Emanuel said, "The U.S.-Japan alliance is stronger than one commerce," adding, "There will be nothing strange about the alliance."

In addition, the Asahi Shimbun reported that "2% of the respondents" recognized the argument that Japan's defense spending should be raised to 3% of its gross domestic product around President-elect Trump.
