UN Secretary-General "Should lead the G20 in reducing greenhouse gases by 9% every year"

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres has called for the leading role of the G20, a major 20 countries, in raising funds to combat climate change.

At the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, on the 13th local time, Guterres said the world could achieve its goal by reducing emissions by 9% annually for 10 years.

The goal mentioned by Secretary-General Guterres refers to the international community's commitment to limit global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times through the Paris Climate Change Agreement in 2015.

However, according to a report by the World Meteorological Organization, even in an optimistic scenario that the decarbonization pledge set out by countries around the world is fully achieved, the probability of global temperature rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius or less is currently only 14%.

To reduce greenhouse gases by 9% annually, Guterres stressed, "we need to secure finances to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels and promote climate change adaptation in developing countries and other countries."

"The G20, the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, should take the lead," he said, adding, "We need to clarify how to mobilize more financial resources first."
