German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made an unannounced visit to Kyiv, Ukraine, today (2nd) for the first time in two and a half years.

In a joint press conference after meeting with President Zelensky, Scholz called for the withdrawal of Russian troops, saying Germany would stand by Ukraine forever.

At the same time, he stressed that Russia should not demand a forced peace and that no decision should be made without Ukraine to achieve a just and lasting peace.

Scholz is said to have promised 650 million euros worth of additional military aid this month during the talks.

President Zelenskyy has called for Germany's unwavering support ahead of parliamentary elections in February next year, saying Russia's intensive missile strikes, in particular, lack air defense systems.

Before the meeting, the two leaders toured military drone forces produced by the two countries in private locations, visited war memorials and paid tribute to the fallen Ukrainian soldiers.

The visit comes 17 days after Zelensky criticized Scholz's phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month.

"We have made it clear that Russia should not expect less support from Germany, Europe and many other countries in the world for Ukraine," Scholz said on why he spoke to Putin.

Despite this explanation, Mr. Zelensky insisted at the time that Mr. Scholz's call "only reduces Putin's isolation."
