Hwaseong City announced that it plans to create an artificial wetland with a total storage capacity of 20,000 tons to reduce non-point pollutants in the Namyang Lake basin by 2027.

This comes after the project was selected for a state-funded project organized by the Ministry of Environment, securing 6.1 billion won in budget, including 4.7 billion won in state funds and 1.4 billion won in provincial funds.

Namyang Lake was designated as a key management reservoir by the Ministry of Environment in 2020 for exceeding the water quality standards for agricultural water. To improve this, Gyeonggi Province has established water quality improvement measures and Hwaseong City, Pyeongtaek City, and Korea Rural Community Corporation are dividing their roles to push for related projects.

Hwaseong Mayor Chung Myung-geun said, "The selection of the government subsidy project has laid the groundwork for improving the water quality of Namyang Lake without a hitch while reducing the city's financial burden."
