Russian President Vladimir Putin said on the 21st local time that Russia had tested a new intermediate-range missile on the attack on Ukraine.
Putin said in a speech on state television that Ukraine had recently fired new mid-range missiles at Ukrainian military facilities in response to the country's recent attack on Russia with Western long-range missiles.
He also introduced the hypersonic missile, which is not equipped with a nuclear warhead, as "Oresynik" (dog cancer), adding that "the test was successful and the launch target was achieved."
"It attacks targets at Mach 10, which is 2.5 to 3 kilometers per second," Putin said of Oresinik, stressing that "there is currently no means to respond to this weapon in the world."
"We have the right to use Russian weapons against countries that have allowed Ukraine to use missiles to attack Russia," he warned.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia had given the U.S. advance notice 30 minutes before launching a new hypersonic missile into Ukraine.
The Russian side warned the U.S. about the launch of the 'Oresynik' missile, he said. "Russia warned the U.S. side through an automatic nuclear proliferation prevention hotline."
Earlier, the Ukrainian military claimed that Russia had fired intercontinental ballistic missiles and ICBMs into Ukraine's Dnipro, but Putin belatedly said the new intermediate-range ballistic missile, not ICBM, was used on a trial basis.
U.S. officials have also told foreign media that they believe intermediate-range ballistic missiles were used, not ICBMs.
