Criticism came from both ruling and opposition parties over the "half memorial service" held at Sado Mine, the site of forced labor for Koreans in Japanese colonial era.

The Democratic Party of Korea strongly protested to Japan and urged Japan to ensure the implementation of follow-up measures, saying at a plenary session of the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs deeply regrets the diplomatic disaster.

Bae Hyun-jin, a member of the People's Power, also pointed out that the government's diplomatic failure and "recklessness" are undeniable, and that the government and its bereaved families are finally absent from the memorial service.

Jeon Jae-soo, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, "It is the second diplomatic disaster after the warship island in 2015," adding, "We will look for measures that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism can do."
