For the third time in constitutional history, the impeachment motion of an incumbent president was reported to the plenary session of the National Assembly.
Earlier, 190 lawmakers from six opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, the New Reform Party, the Progressive Party, the Basic Income Party, and the Social Democratic Party, and 191 independent lawmakers, including Kim Jong-min, proposed the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
In the impeachment motion, the opposition party presented the reason for the impeachment that the emergency martial law declared by President Yoon on the 3rd violated the constitution and laws, including the principle of national sovereignty and separation of powers.
The impeachment bill also included the claim that freedom of expression was violated under the constitution because all media and publications were controlled by martial law and strikes and rallies were banned under the decree announced after the issuance of the emergency martial law.
The impeachment bill should be voted on within 72 hours after 24 hours after the plenary session's report, and the impeachment bill of President Yoon will be available after midnight on the 6th.
The requirement for passing the president's impeachment bill is a majority motion of the National Assembly members and more than two-thirds of the members of the National Assembly, and if the impeachment bill is passed, President Yoon's duties will be suspended immediately.
