High-tariff delinquents are being held in jail...the first case since the introduction of the system

2025.01.09 AM 11:32
For the first time, a delinquent person who has a considerable wealth but has not paid high tariffs habitually has been imprisoned.

The Korea Customs Service said it imprisoned Mr. A, a high-value habitual delinquent, in Uijeongbu prison.

A will be imprisoned for 30 days until the 6th of next month for the first time since the introduction of the high-value habitual delinquent detention system under the Customs Act in 2020.

Under the Customs Act, it targets delinquents who have repeatedly paid more than 200 million won in tariffs more than three times despite their ability to pay taxes.

You can attract delinquents to detention centers for up to 30 days after the application of the head of the Korea Customs Service, the request of the prosecutor, and the decision of the court.

Earlier, it was investigated that A used a third party to illegally win the right to import agricultural products in the process of bidding for a short sale of agricultural products, and then avoided tariffs by importing high-tax imported agricultural products at low tax rates.

It is known that A did not pay taxes even though he had about 7 billion won worth of assets in the name of his spouse and children.

An official from the Korea Customs Service said, "This is the first time that a customs delinquent person who has not paid taxes without justifiable reasons has been detained in prison," adding, "It will be a wake-up call for a delinquent person who maliciously avoids paying taxes."
