As ChatGPT developer OpenAI seeks to transform itself into a for-profit corporation, Facebook parent Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also come out against it, following Tesla CEO Elon Musk and CEO.
The Wall Street Journal reported on the 15th local time that Zuckerberg recently sent a letter to the California attorney general asking him to prevent OpenAI from turning into a for-profit corporation.
"OpenAI has raised billions of dollars using its status as a non-profit organization," Zuckerberg said in the letter, noting that it is now looking to change its status and use the investments it has attracted for private gain.
"If OpenAI is converted into a for-profit corporation, it will have a tremendous negative impact on Silicon Valley and set a bad precedent for many startups," he said, adding, "Non-profit corporate investors will be able to benefit from taxes while also benefiting like for-profit corporate investors."
This reflects concerns that OpenAI, which is leading the AI technology competition with ChatGPT, will become a threatening competitor in the AI market if it turns into a for-profit corporation amid accelerating competition among tech companies over AI technology.
OpenAI is pushing for a for-profit corporation transition and is in initial discussions with California authorities to do so, Bloomberg reported last month.
Musk also earlier filed a lawsuit seeking to halt OpenAI's for-profit transformation into a for-profit corporation, alleging that Altman violated its commitment to run OpenAI as a non-profit organization and violated its contract with investors and others in pursuit of profit.
In June last year, Musk and Zuckerberg, who had a bitter relationship with each other, even foreshadowed a martial arts fight online, have formed a joint opposition to OpenAI's move to transform into a for-profit corporation.
In an article titled "Musk Wanted OpenAI's For-profit Pursuit," OpenAI countered on the 13th, "Musk proposed the transformation of OpenAI into a for-profit corporation in 2017, and actually created a for-profit corporation."
