Kyodo News reported that the leakage of radioactive contaminated water from Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant No. 2 in August was confirmed to be caused by damage to pipes.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. reportedly found a hole about 1 centimeter in the pipe below the tank to check the water level of the spent nuclear fuel cooling tank.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. will repair the pipe after finding the cause of the damage.

On August 9, Tokyo Electric Power Co. investigated the abnormally low water level in the water level check tank and found that 25 tons of contaminated water, including radioactive materials, had leaked.

As a result, we have stopped injecting water and have used remote control robots and drones to investigate the cause of the leak.

The water level check tank is a facility that checks the full capacity of the cooling tank while collecting overflowing water from the spent nuclear fuel cooling tank.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. also released a video taken during the process of removing nuclear fuel debris from Unit 2, which was suspended on the 9th of last month due to a camera failure.

The video showed a small lift of nuclear fuel debris with a nail-shaped device.

The removal of nuclear fuel debris, considered the most difficult task in the process of dismantling the accidental nuclear power plant, has never been successful since the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011.

The removal of nuclear fuel debris was scheduled to begin in 2021, but it has already been delayed for about three years due to several delays due to equipment problems.
