A group of people who made and sold billions of won worth of so-called "fake" Starbucks tumblers have been caught.

The Trademark Special Judicial Police of the Korean Intellectual Property Office booked nine people, including the 53-year-old A, without detention, for making and selling 130,000 fake Starbucks tumblers in Gyeonggi-do Province for three years from 2021.

If the tumbler sold is converted into a genuine amount, it is worth 6.2 billion won.

To avoid crackdowns, Mr. A and others were found to have made counterfeit tumblers by importing unbranded tumbler bodies, lids, and rubber pads from overseas, assembling them in Korea, and printing and attaching Starbucks logos.

The fake product made in this way was deceived as if it were a parallel import product and sold it to government offices, companies, and private organizations at a 50% lower price than the original product.

The Korean Intellectual Property Office said that criminal methods are evolving through information sharing among criminal groups, and that it will further strengthen the investigation of counterfeit goods based on the latest investigation techniques.
