On New Year's Day, even though it was a holiday, a procession of citizens' condolences continued in the morning at the joint memorial altar here.

And as time goes by, more and more people are visiting this place alone or with family or acquaintances.

As you can see, in the middle of a long line of waiting, silent tribute and flowers are given to the victims in order.

Let's hear from the citizens who visited the joint memorial altar.

[Jo Dongil / Mourners] I wanted you to go to a good place and sleep comfortably. In a way, peaceful daily life collapsed in an instant.]

From yesterday to 1 p.m. today, 11,602 citizens visited the joint memorial altar of Seoul City Hall and finished their condolences.

The joint memorial altar set up in 20 cities and provinces across the country, including Seoul, will be open until the 4th, the national mourning period.

Most of the New Year's events have been canceled to join the memorial, right?

[Reporter]
Yes, the representative New Year's celebration, the Bell of the Night Bell in Bosingak, Seoul, was canceled and only the bell ceremony was held more solemnly than usual.

In particular, we held a moment of mourning and silence for the victims of the Jeju Air plane disaster in the middle of the event.

Across the country, sunset events have been canceled since yesterday, and festivals have not been held at sunrise spots such as Homigot in Pohang and Ganjeolgot in Ulsan this morning.

The religious community has also canceled most of the New Year's events and is participating in the memorial, with the Christian Corps only holding worship services.

As many as 179 people have been killed, the atmosphere of remembrance is expected to continue after the 4th, the national mourning period.

So far, I've delivered it to you at the Seoul City Hall joint memorial altar.
