South Korea and the United States have kicked off a joint research project to accurately track air pollution from space.

According to the official website of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Korea U.S.-Air Quality study (KORUS-AQ) on dust particles officially kicked off at Osan Air Base, south of Seoul on Monday.

Three KORUS-AQ aircrafts -- the NASA DC-8, the NASA King Air B-200, and the Hanseo King Air B-200 -- will collect data on air quality across South Korea, using the observations of aircraft, ground sites, ships as well as satellites.

Around 400 scientists from NASA and South Korea's National Institute of Environmental Research are participating in the six-week joint project which will continue until the end of June.
