'1987: When the Day Comes' tops 4M viewers

The historical film "1987: When the Day Comes" also has been successful in the local box office by attracting more than four million viewers in less than two weeks.


The movie depicts the June 1987 pro-democracy movement which was ignited by the torture death of Park Jong-Chul, a university student activist, leading to a direct presidential election eventually.

On January 8th, President Moon Jae-In and his wife Kim Jung-Sook watched the movie along with ordinary moviegoers at a Seoul cinema.

Actor Gang Dong-Won who played the role of another student activist Lee Han-Yeol killed by a tear gas canister from riot police during a street protest in Seoul in 1987 burst into tears while appearing for stage greetings.

"I thought that I owed a lot to them. So, I joined the movie with an idea of paying back a little. But my heart still aches...."

Since premiered in Los Angeles "1987: When the Day Comes" which opened in Los Angeles and Buena Park, California, on December 29th, will get wider release in North America, including New York City, starting January 12th.

The movie is also scheduled to open in Taiwan on the same day, Australia and New Zealand on January 18th, Singapore on February 1st and Hong Kong and Macao on March 8th.
