National Security Adviser Kim Kwan-jin said the government is studying whether to provide more support from a 'humanitarian' perspective for the United States fighting the Islam State militants.

Kim made the comments after arriving in Washington on Sunday, for a four-day trip for talks with his White House counterpart Susan Rice and other senior U.S. officials.

Kim said that if materialized, South Korea's support for the U.S.-led international efforts to quell the group of Sunni extremists based in Iraq and Syria, will remain within Seoul's capacity for humanitarian assistance.

During his first trip to the U.S. as the senior presidential security adviser, Kim plans to discuss a wide range of bilateral and regional issues, including those on North Korea and delaying the U.S. transfer of wartime operational control to South Korea.

When asked about a U.S. plan to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile battery to South Korea, Kim said Seoul has not received any official notification from Washington.
