Students from 10 South Korean universities are receiving Hyundai Motor's compact car.

The students are to modify the car into a self-driving vehicle over the next four months.

The cars will take part in a self-driving car contest to be held in November in the country's southeastern city of Daegu.

The Daegu event is to be the country's first self-driving car contest to be staged on a real road.

[Moon Seung-Wook. senior official, MOTIE]
"We've offered more challenging tasks (to the students) and they are expected to make a lot of mistakes because they will take on very difficult missions, such as unmanned courier services and autonomous taxi services. But we believe that this will make the contest a more exciting and promising event."

[Park Moon-Su, student participant, Sungkyunkwan University]

"Although the preparatory period is short, the team members will do their utmost to see a good result."

For this year, not only Korean students but also those from universities in China and Japan will be joining in the contest.

The growth of the self-driving car contest reflects the Korean government's determined will to boost the autonomous car industry.
